MOUNTAIN CONDITIONS 16/1/2026

16 January 2026

An unrelenting winter! Constant weather activity, new snowfalls, wind and cold are making this winter truly severe. Great caution is required to go to the mountains safely; there will be snow until April, so patience is needed.

Summary of conditions:

Summary of weather data at 2,000 metres:

Forecast: (meteomuntanya.cat and @meteocattv)

This weekend another front will bring significant snowfall; next week looks set to be eventful.

Snowpack:

The snowpack is continuous and quite thick for this time of year, starting at 1,500m on north-facing slopes and 1,700m on south-facing slopes. This week’s wind and a bit of a westerly breeze have altered the snowpack’s condition; overall, it’s quite variable and uneven. At higher elevations, we’re seeing fan-shaped patches on ridges and passes, and accumulations on leeward slopes, especially on south and east-facing slopes. Below the summits, the snow is still cold with instability on north and west-facing slopes. At lower elevations, the snow is somewhat embedded on shaded slopes and hard on sunny slopes. It even felt like spring on Wednesday.

It’s snowing today, Friday, and heavy snowfall is expected. The snowpack will turn to wet snow, especially at lower elevations, and we’ll have to see how the wind behaves. The avalanche risk is currently 3 out of 5, but it could increase in certain areas.

This isn’t a weekend for excessive activity; we need to be cautious and stay within designated areas. We’ll have plenty of time to enjoy this magnificent winter later.

On the Camí Vell, we found snow above 1600 meters, shortly after the Cremal bridge. This snow is compacted from foot traffic and is very icy in many places. Carrying flexible crampons in your backpack can solve this problem. It’s not suitable for people without winter experience. With the expected snowfall, snowshoes will be necessary. Until the snowfall subsides, this trail is exposed to avalanches; it is NOT RECOMMENDED.

The Coll de Fontalba tea neu track in els darrers 2 km. The road from Fontalba, along the 2,000m elevation, is very clear and has some areas of high risk. It is not recommended for people with a winter experience. With a minimum of essential flexible crampons. Amb the expected snowfall. rackets will be necessary. Although the snowfall episode did not pass, this road is exposed to avalanches; it is NOT RECOMMENDED.

The Enginyers road is left hanging from snow and is not recommended throughout the winter season due to having areas in danger of having fatal consequences.
