La Molina Projects: sustainability and innovation in the mountains

La Molina, a benchmark in sustainable tourism and winter sports in Catalonia

La Molina has become one of the most iconic destinations in the Pyrenees thanks to its commitment to sustainability, innovation and continuous improvement. Through European and local projects, it promotes initiatives that seek to balance the tourist experience with the protection of the natural environment. This responsible approach allows visitors to enjoy the mountains all year round, combining sport, nature and sustainable development.

PITON Project: innovation for a sustainable mountain transition

The European project PITON (PYRENEES INNOVATION HOLISTIC MOUNTAIN TRANSITION) was created with the aim of supporting the transformation of mountain territories towards more sustainable and resilient models in the face of climate change and new social challenges.

Piton Project

La Molina, pilot territory of the PITON project

As a ski and mountain resort of FGC Turisme, La Molina is actively participating as a pilot territory, becoming a testing ground for the development and validation of innovative tools and models that help address the challenges faced by mountain areas.

A European project for sustainable transition

The PITON project is co-funded by the European Union through the Interreg VI-A Spain-France-Andorra programme (POCTEFA 2021-2027). It brings together 10 partners from Catalonia, France and Andorra with a common goal: to create a new integrated approach for the sustainable transition of mountain resorts.

Main objectives of the PITON project

  • Create tools and methodologies that facilitate sustainable decision-making.
  • Develop and test these solutions in pilot territories such as La Molina.
  • Disseminate the results and best practices in other areas of the Pyrenees.

Social and technological innovation in mountain management

PITON combines social and technological innovation to promote sustainability:

  • Social innovation: involving all territorial stakeholders (citizens, institutions and companies) in the decision-making process.
  • Technological innovation: through the use of digital tools to collect and analyse data, fostering a better understanding of the relationship between the resorts and their natural environment.

A replicable model for the Catalan Pyrenees

Thanks to its participation in the PITON project, La Molina has established itself as an example of how mountain resorts can adapt to new climate and social challenges, serving as a model for other territories in their transition towards a greener, smarter and more sustainable future.
